Day 2 - Topics

Moodle Project

Moodle has become the world’s most successful open source learning management system. It is used by many institutions of higher education, K-12 schools and businesses. By using Moodle in this project you will be able to identify the basic building blocks and functions of learning management systems. In addition, creating a course in this project will provide you the necessary skills to use these functions. You will also be able to transfer your skills to using proprietary learning management systems most of which have similar structures and functions to Moodle.

Note: There is a Moodle Project Check Off Sheet that you can use throughout this project to make sure you have not missed any of the necessary pieces.

  • Read the article A Model for Designing Virtual Dynamic Instructional and Learning Systems (VDILS). Apply these concepts within your Moodle course, especially when incorporating learning activities, deliverables, and collaboration into your course.
  • Read the Moodle Getting Started for Teachers Guide. This will give you an introduction to the basic functions in Moodle. It will also show you how to edit a course and explain the different activities and resources available for you to use within your Moodle course. It's a great place to get started in creating a course that fits your needs. This document and other Moodle documentation will be referred to within the rest of the project. Whenever you see a hyperlink in the project description, click on the link to get more information about that topic. In addition, the Moodle documents also provide educational benefits and pedagogical advice on the use of the different functions within Moodle.
  • Create your account
    • Go to Moodle
    • Log in using your Username and Password
    • Find your joint account with your team member
  • Set up a short course in Moodle. This course must include ALL of the following items; however, you are welcome to include additional items that you feel would be effective for the course.
    • 1 syllabus (for an example refer to the syllabus for this course), including:
      • Course description - Present the description of the course content, theories, concepts, principles, and skills that the course covers. Explain what students can expect to learn in the course in general terms.
      • Instructor Profile/Portfolio/Website - Introduce the instructor by creating a link to his/her portfolio or website. Make a link to the instructor's email address, and state his/her electronic office hours. State if the instructor is supported by a teacher or graduate assistant and what his/her role would be.
      • Course goals/Learner outcomes - List the general goals for the course.
      • Course technologies - List the hardware and software technologies students need for the course, such as, video camera, microphone, speakers, the recommended web browser, Adobe Reader, Flash player, Quicktime player, etc.
      • Course learning materials - List the course learning materials, such as the course textbook and website. Explain what kind of information the students can expect to find in the course website, such as links to the selected articles, or access to an electronic library.
      • Course communication - Explain how learners will communicate with the instructor and with each other. List the communication applications, such as, email synchronous chats, asynchronous discussions, audio and video and specify their use in the course. In the case of email, state if you require certain format for the subject line of the email to ensure filtering of the email to the appropriate mailbox. Also describe how students should submit their deliverables, and if they are to submit individual files, how they should name the files.
      • Course policies - Include policies for attendance and other similar requirements in this section.
      • Assessment - Explain how students will be assessed in the course by listing the deliverables they must create and present.
      • Grading scheme - Present a rubric for the course deliverables and the grade points assigned to each deliverable. Explain the policy for submitting deliverables late. State the incomplete policy of the department/organization/university/etc.
      • Resources - Include appropriate resources, such as the World Time Clock if you have geographically disbursed students.
    • 3 modules or class sessions Each class session must include the following:
    • Within your course, you must also include one of the following; however, you do not need include these in every module. Your use of these functionalities will be determined by the objectives you set for that class session.
      • 1 Collaborative interaction (Ex: Forum, Wiki, etc.)
        • You may want to use one of the following functions in Moodle for this part of the project:
      • 1 Quiz
      • 1 Resource
  • Use the High Quality Online Course Rubric to test out your course with a live audience. Have each participant fill out the rubric as they attend your course. Include your results in your paper.
  • Write a paper about your experience with Moodle
    • Identify the different administrative functions available in Moodle
    • Identify the course creation functionality within Moodle
    • Identify the editing functionality within Moodle
    • Describe the pros and cons of these different functions
    • Write a brief description about your course – make sure to include your course name
    • Based on the High Quality Online Course Rubric your “live” participants filled out about your Moodle course, describe:
      • The success of the course
      • The aspects of your course you would change and why
      • The aspects of your course you would keep the same and why
    • What aspects of the model for designing VDILS did you use within your course? How did you incorporate these concepts into your course?
  • Post your paper on the Moodle Project discussion forum. Use the title "Moodle Project Paper – Your Name"

    Day 2 - Assignments

    • Begin work on Moodle Project
    • Write a formal project proposal for your Moodle Project. You must include the following
      • Course goals and objectives - Describe all of the overall goals and specific objectives for your course in Moodle.
      • Description of content - Describe exactly what content will be covered in each session of the course and how it relates to the objectives you identified.
      • Type & description of collaborative interactions - Moodle contains many different collaborative tools (Blogs, Chats, Forums, Wikis, etc.). Describe which of these tools you plan to use and what purpose they will serve within your course. Also, describe where and how these collaborative interactions will be implemented within the course.
      • Type & description of deliverables - You can have many different deliverables within a course (Assignments, Forum posts, Glossary additions, Wiki posts, Workshops, etc.) Describe which if these deliverables you plan to use and how each relates to the objectives for your course. Also, describe where and how these deliverables will be implemented into your course, whether it is a homework assignment, in-class assignment, etc.
      • Type of assessments & how they will assess student performance - You can either use a Lesson or Quiz Module in Moodle to assess students. Explain which type of assessment tool you plan on using and how it will assess your specific objectives for the class.

This project proposal is due on Day 3 of the course. Please post your project proposal to the Moodle Project Proposal forums using the links above for each section of the proposal.
